Margaret Thatcher
-
Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013) was The Prime Minister of the UK from 1979 to 1990.
-
She was the first female Prime Minister of the UK in addition to being the longest serving Prime Minister of her century.
-
Thatcher was known for her strong leadership which earned her the nickname "The Iron Lady."
-
Her government implemented major economic reforms, including privatisation of state-owned industries, reducing the power of trade unions, and promoting individual responsibility. She was extremely against trade unions.
-
Thatcher was also known for her foreign policy, such as invading the Falkland Islands to reclaim them from Argentina in 1982.
-
Her time as PM was extremely controversial with some "Thatcherites" praising her economic reforms, whereas others criticised her for the social impact of her economic reforms. The effects of privatisation are still felt to this day with issues arising from previously state-owned institutions prioritising profit over public service.
